Getting to Know the Farmers Union Insurance/NDHSAA Distinguished Student - Jordyn Hetland

Editorial note: We will be publishing a series of articles on getting to know this year’s distinguished student finalists.

Jordyn Hetland from Wyndmere High School is this year’s NDHSAA/Farmers Union Insurance Distinguished Student.  Jordyn is seventeen years old and enjoys baking, movies, reading and spending time with friends.  While attending Wyndmere, Jordyn has selected math as her favorite subject.  She is very involved in extracurricular activities, where she participates in FFA, Speech, Student Council, Drama, Football Manager, SOS peer leadership, Band and Choir.  With Jordyn’s busy schedule she still finds time to give back to her community.  It is a laundry list of activities outside of school to include: Relay for Life, United Way, volunteering at the senior citizen center, Food Shelf can collection, recycling programs, service mission trips, Special Olympics, as well as Meals of Hope.

Upon graduation, Jordyn plans to attend North Dakota State University and pursue a degree in elementary education.  With that degree, she envisions herself teaching 6th grade in a small town while living on a farm in 10 years.

When asked, “What is the first thing you would do if you were elected President?”  Jordyn’s response would be to devise a system in which every person could go to college without ridiculous prices.  She refers to many other countries that have free or reduced prices for higher education.

Outside of her family, Jordyn admires Mrs. (Desi) Severance because, “She has been such an encouraging teacher in my life.  Not only has she taught me so much, she has also influenced me to strengthen my leadership skills and become a more confident person.”

Jordyn points out open mindedness as the most important characteristic of a leader.

We asked Jordyn several unique questions to get to know her better.  She stated her pet peeve is open mouth chewing.  Her perfect vacation would be with her friends in a warmer climate doing adventures and exploring.  She could not go a day without pintrest and her favorite holiday is Christmas and baking huge batches of Christmas cookies to eat all year long.  Her response to the question of whom she would like to have a meal with living or dead included the following: Jennifer Lawrence, her great grandmother, Jesus Christ and Anne Frank.  Any finally, if we made of movie of her life, Emma Watson would play the role of Jordyn.

Congratulations to Jordyn Hetland, this year’s NDHSAA/Farmer Union Insurance Distinguished Student and best of luck in her future endeavors.
