VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The 2017-18 North Dakota High School Activities Association Class B girls basketball season has started.

Kindred is the defending NDHSAA Class B girls basketball state champion. The Vikings graduated a talented group of seniors from last year’s squad that went undefeated, but several talented, tournament-tested players remain on Kindred’s roster.

The ND Hoopster Magazine picked Kindred to repeat as Region 1 champions. The Vikings return eighth grader Abby Duchscherer (5-11, guard) who averaged 9.6 points and three rebounds per game in her first season of varsity basketball. Senior Victoria Braaten (5-7, guard) also returns for the Vikings averaging 6 ppg and was one of the team’s top free-throw shooters a year ago.

Thompson – the ND Hoopster’s preseason pick to win Region 2 – were runners up a year ago at the Region 2 tournament going 16-8. A good group returns for the Tommies led by senior Kailen Dolleslager (10.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg).

Carrington is the ND Hoopster preseason pick to win Region 3. The Cardinals won District 5 a year ago and were runners up in Region 3.

In Region 4, Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich returns four starters and has positioned itself as one of the front runners in the region. The Cardinals finished third in Region 4 a year ago and were 20-4. Leading the group of returners is senior Jordyn Worley (17.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg).

Grant County – defending Region 5 champions – are the ND Hoopster preseason pick to repeat and return to the state tournament. Seniors Taylor Roehl (17.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and Alexis Bentz (12.5 ppg and 8.2 rpg) will be one of the best duos in the state this season.

In Region 6 appears to be wide open in the early going, but Rugby (2017 District 11 champions) could emerge as a favorite as the season plays out. The Panthers return 5-9 senior Madison Uhlenkamp (13 ppg, 8 rpg) that leads a strong core of players that got plenty of minutes during the 2016-17 season.

Glen Ullin/Hebron – defending Region 7 champions – are predicted to take the region crown again this season. Seniors Kiana Schatz (14 ppg, 7 rpg) and Kennedy Zuroff (12 ppg, 6 rpg) lead the Bearcats' returners.

In Region 8, New Town is picked to push through and make a run at the state tournament. After going 21-4 a year ago the Eagles will be looking to build on that effort in which New Town won the District 15 tournament and took third at the Region 8 tournament. New Town is led by 5-5 junior Tyleigh Brady (17.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg), 5-8 senior Caitlyn Tveter (14.5 ppg, 4 rpg) and 5-7 senior Tamara Fox (10.0 ppg, 5 rpg).
