NFHS Coach Education Tops One Million Courses

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (September 24, 2012) — Earlier this month, the NFHS Coach Education Program reached a significant milestone when it surpassed one million course deliveries through www.nfhslearn.com. Since its launch in January 2007, the NFHS Coach Education Program has grown to offer 30 online courses aimed at educating coaches on a variety of topics, including sport-specific courses.
The free course – "Concussion in Sports: What You Need to Know" – accounts for more than half of the one million, with 570,000 course deliveries. The site offers several other free courses, including ones on the role of parents in sports, heat acclimatization and sportsmanship.
The NFHS recently announced that its course "NCAA Eligibility Center Coaching Education" is now being offered free of charge, and includes the latest updates to the registration and certification process required by the NCAA. The course also provides the new initial-eligibility standards effective for the 2016 recruiting class.
"The free courses have been a great way to educate the masses and attract more people to the Web site," said Dan Schuster, NFHS assistant director of coach education. “Hopefully, our free courses continue to be the driving force for coaches, parents, students, officials and administrators to take our other courses, which also are very valuable.”
Individuals in Massachusetts have taken the most free courses, with nearly 100,000 courses delivered. New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia round out the top five for free courses.
“It’s just the beginning,” Schuster said. “Looking back to 2007, to hear that we would deliver one million courses on this system, we would have been [ecstatic]. However, looking forward, we’re really just starting to scratch the surface as far as how many coaches we can reach in the big picture. Hopefully, this is just the first of many millions that we do.”
The NFHS Coach Education Program offers 30 online courses, including the two core courses – Fundamentals of Coaching and First Aid Health and Safety for Coaches. The NFHS also offers 13 sport-specific courses and seven elective courses.
